Chapter 11

We spent the next few days on Saurus. Our time was divided between sight-seeing, training, and learning more about the local culture. Admittedly, Starla and Astrid were more interested in the latter than I was.

Pontu and Adon showed me a large clearing outside of their village that was perfect for training with my new equipment. They cautioned me from going wild with the bracers, but they made it clear that it would be better for me to get familiar with them sooner rather than later.

The only time I had used a grappling feature was when we were boarded by the EDF, and the experience of soaring through trees was quite different. The feeling of flight as I sliced through the humid air and rocketed from one tree to another was amazing. I felt like a superhero with each pull.

I probably spent more time than was necessary just soaring around the tree lines, but it was just too much fun! Eventually, I knew I would need to test out some of the other features of the equipment.

After some reassurance that testing out the blasters would be acceptable in the forest, I decided to give them a whirl. The bracers shifted around my forearm and elongated to engulf my fist as it took on a small cannon like shape. I braced myself for whatever recoil was about to happen as I concentrated on charging a blast.

There was a heat that grew around my hand just before I released the charge and watched a large ball of energy rocket out of the barrel. For being short-range, it got more distance than I was expecting. I had no way of measuring it, but I estimated that it was close to two hundred meters which was awesome.

That was how I spent the first two days while we waited. I would check in with my family and spend my nights with my wives in a private room that Adon had provided for us. I tried to make it a point to spend a couple of hours a day with each of them before I would head back to the clearing.

The third and final day arrived, and I was determined to spend it trying out some ideas I had. I wanted to see if I could adapt enough to shift between the grappling hooks, blaster, sword, and shield on the fly. It wasn’t an easy task, but I soon began to get a decent grip on the base concept.

I dropped to the canopy with a shield on my left arm and heard the deep voice of Adon calling out behind me.

“You seem to be getting fairly adept with those, Mack. Perhaps you would like some more practical experience?”

I turned around and grinned. “What did you have in mind?”

The elongated polearm that was strapped across his back hadn’t been lost on me. Nor had the unique gauntlet that was on his left arm. I was no expert on weapons, by any means, but the gauntlet looked like a folded-up crossbow.
